Super worms could be the solution to the world’s recycling problems according to scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia. Super worms are originally from Central and South America and grow to be about 2 inches in length. Microbiologists are feeding three teams of larvae three different diets, including Styrofoam, to see how the bugs break it down. One says ‘it feeds the bacteria in the guts’ leading to ‘a very exciting discovery.’

This may look gross but super worms may be the solution to the world's plastic recycling problems. Australian biologists are studying how Styrofoam can be a sustainable snack for the bugs. The mouth shreds it and then.

Christian Rinke: eats it and then basically feeds the bacteria in the guts. And what we have shown is that the bacteria have enzymes in Koda. He says that the Super worm breaks it down in its body. The team studied three groups of the larvae which are usually about two inches long and used as pet food. The group on the Styrofoam diet not only survived but gained some weight. 

Christian Rinke: I think it's a very exciting discovery for us because you know when we started it um we didn't know if the super bowls could actually do what we want them to do to create the plastic so that's a good outcome. The long-term goal is to treat plastic waste at recycling plants after it's been mechanically shredded. But the scientists need to study the enzymes better to know exactly how to reproduce them in a lab in larger quantities. 

Christian Rinke: we want to know exactly what each enzyme does if they work together, Right? What kind of condition is the need what temperature. Tests did show pathogens in the super worm's gut proving it's not the most nutritious diet but if they can pinpoint the science behind breaking down the Styrofoam snack, the worms can take a bite of something a little healthier and the planet stands to benefit.
