This isn¡¯t magic, its science. Seven year old Pika conducts a simple experiment every day. A piece of paper can be as strong as this. Water can be frozen in second. Your eyes will be fooled. He has completed more than 100 experiments since late April.

Pika: This is a non- Newtonian fluid, which acts like both solid and liquid. When pressure is applied it turns solid. Without pressure, its fluid. You just need to mix water and cornstarch in a ratio. This is the first experiment he shared. Pika¡¯s mum: He conducted his first experiment in school. After he got home, he wanted to show it to us. We happen to have the material he needed at home including white vinegar, baking soda, a bottle and a balloon. He put the vinegar and baking soda into type bottle, and covered the opening with the balloon. Just like that, the balloon started to inflate. His parents have supported his experiments ever since. They even look for experiments online and in books and discuss them with Pika.

Pika: I think doing experiments can let children learn some knowledge about science. They¡¯ll think that science is meaningful and fun. So I think it¡¯s great.

Pika¡¯s mum: We support Pika, helping him with his experiments. Pika has always been good with his hands. He can complete easy experiments i just a few minutes. But he can sometimes struggle with more complicated ones

Pika¡¯s mum: After conducting these experiments, he began thinking about the theory behind some everyday occurrences. For example, after we did an experiment about inertia he understood why we need to wear seatbelts during a car ride, for safety. Pika wants to be an astronaut and visit the moon in the future. His mother hasn¡¯t signed him up for any extra classes. She wants to leave some room for Pika to do what he likes. Their relationship has been always been close.

Pika¡¯s mum: I think conducting experiments with kids is a good way to keep them company. If you want to do something meaningful with your kids despite limited time, or don¡¯t know what to do with them, this is great.
