Museum scientist Natalie Cooper: Breeding season is a
stinky time for goats.
One of the ways that a male will attract a female is by
urinating all over his front legs, chest and face.
Females in heat will then
smell this urine and be attracted to the male. Males also have scent glands
behind their horns, which they use to create other attractive smells, well,
attractive to female goats anyway.
The female can use this combination of
smells to get an idea about the quality of her mate.
Some females will not
actually breed with a descented male, suggesting that there’s nothing more
seductive to a female goat than a splash of eau d’urine.
