Why do ants farm aphids
An example of mutualism in nature, ants stroke their
aphids' antennae and lap up sugary liquid called honeydew.

Aphids create a sweet liquid called honeydew. Ants
love it! They even farm it.
Gavin Broad: Some ants run the insect equivalent of
dairy farms. A bit like cattle farmers, they keep herds of sap-sucking aphids. The
ants move their aphids to the juiciest parts plants protecting them from
predators such as ladybirds. In return, the ants milk the aphids for honeydew, the
waste product of their diet, by stroking them with their antennae and lapping
up the sugary liquid as it`s secreted. Ants and aphids both benefit from this
relationship, making it an example of mutualism. Humans first domesticated
plants and animals 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. However, ants have been farming
aphids and fungi for millions of years.
Emily Osterloff: Millions of years that is incredible!
