This irregular phenomenon was last seen two years ago and made headlines for being the cause of extreme weather patterns around the world. 2016 was also recorded as the hottest year ever. El Nino is triggered by fluctuating ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific, which can trigger drought in some regions and heavy rain in others The previous El Nino was said to be the strongest ever recorded, but the WMO says the upcoming one will not be as powerful.
