Hello, friends. Today
we will learn about how animals survive in Antarctica.

Oh, it's freezing cold
here! You are fully covered ha ha. The most common question asked about the
animals in Antarctica is how do they survive with the extreme cold
circumstances that are found there.

Animals that live in
Antarctica have special adaptations that allow them to survive in the extreme
conditions.

Let's learn about them
one by one.

Thick waterproof and
windproof coats:

Many Antarctic animals
like emperor penguins have either a waterproof or windproof coat. They have
four layers of scale-like feathers. These layers overlap each other and form a
very good protection from the winds.

Blubber layers:

Ah! Look at these
seals. Uhm, seals and some penguins have thick fat layers called the blubber
layers. Their effect is like covering yourself in a blanket, but on the inside.
Some animals like sea otters are able to reduce blood flow to the blubber
layers; the further the blood is from the surface of skin, the less heat is
lost.

Small
extremities:

An extremity is a limb
or appendage of the body, particularly the feet and hands. These are the first
places to feel cold in winter. And Arctic animals like emperor penguins and
elephant seals have tiny bill and flippers, which means less blood is required
for these areas and thus less heat is lost.

Behavioral
adaptations:

Behavioral adaptations
are the things animals do to survive. Uhm for example, orca whales travel in a
group of about 40. And this togetherness keeps them warm and can reduce heat
loss by up to 50 percent. Swarms can have approximately 10,000 to 35,000
individuals per cubic meter of seawater, and in the harsh winter, they are
found beneath sea ice, which keeps them warm.

Special adaptations by
emperor penguins:

They are highly
adapted to cold environment as emperor penguin is the only animal that breed
during the Antarctic winter. Emperor penguins have nasal chambers which recover
much of the heat lost through breathing process,  and closely aligned
arteries and veins.

Now you know how hard
the life is in Antarctica!

Uhm, if you would like
to help the animals, you can reduce carbon emissions, which lead to global
warming.

Some very simple
measures include using energy-saver appliances, buying locally grown produce,
recycling, etc.
